Your grade for the course will be determined by a cumulative point total weighted as follows: Homework 33% Midterm 33% Final Exam 34% Important: YOU MUST TAKE THE FINAL EXAM TO PASS THE CLASS! The dates for the midterms are as follows: Midterm: Friday, October 31 Final Exam: Friday, December 12, 4:10pm–7:00pm. NOTE: All exams and quizzes are CLOSED book. Notes and books will not be allowed. There are NO makeup exams. If an emergency situation arises which will cause you to miss an exam, you must contact me BEFORE the exam is given. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Possible penalties include a failing grade for the course. Homework: I will be assigning homework on a regular basis. Most will be from the book and maybe a few will be custom-built. It will be collected and graded. What I will be looking for is clear and understandable (and correct) solutions to the homework problems. If you make a claim in the solution to a problem, you should be able to justify it (this includes clearly explaining your reasoning to peers in front of the board!). Learning how to write up a clear and precise proofs will be one of the primary goals of the course. Topology is a beautiful subject. However, when one first learns it, it is often difficult to see the "forest through the trees." Hopefully, by the end of the course, you will not only be comfortable working with the many topological definitions you will encounter, but will also have an idea of what the "big picture" is.
